An Insider’s Guide to Greece

What to do and where to stay in Greece

In Greece, you will find music and mega-yachts and boutique resorts galore. This time of year, we’re ready to drop it all for a splash of sun – and Greece is top of mind. But in a sea of tempting islands, how to choose between Santorini and Pátmos, Rhodes and Corfu? Here are some ideas on how you can make the most of your next Greek vacation.

First off, decide where in the country you want to explore. With all of the ancient history and beautiful seascapes, this can be challenging. I like to find inspiration on social media and also talk to friends who have been there. What did they enjoy doing while there? Where did they stay? What was their favorite part of their vacation? Now, I don’t like to copy their plans but I would like to check out some of their suggestions if they align with my interests.

Hotels

When looking for the perfect hotel in Greece, I like to make sure that is has a checklist of amenities that I enjoy. Is there a spa? Do they have concierge to help me get around the area? Are there house cars? What restaurants are on-site? Is there enough space in my room? What is the view like from that room? When I take the time to visit a destination, I want to make sure I am comfortable and have a fabulous time. It isn’t worth it to me to skimp on things I enjoy if the price is a bit higher. I’m on vacation. I’m there to relax and explore.

I don’t usually look at how many stars the property has (unless I am comparing a few options) but you can usually tell what kind of experience you will have from what the property offers. Is there an on-site sommelier or a pillow concierge? You are looking at a higher-end property. Custom scents in the room? Again, you are looking at a higher end property. These luxury touches can really take your vacation experience to the next level of enjoyment. You didn’t fly half way around the world to have a view of a parking lot from your micro-hotel.

If this is your first time in Greece, you will probably make Athens your first stop. Many air carriers have great rates to this capitol city. One of my favorites is the King George. Located in the center of Athens since 1930, King George represents the absolute essence of a fascinating boutique hotel. The hotel features 102 rooms and suites and incomparable views of the Parthenon. The Penthouse Suite, which occupies the entire ninth floor, has its own outdoor private pool and a breathtaking view of the Acropolis. Located on the seventh floor, the Tudor Hall Restaurant features neoclassical décor, unrivaled views of the Acropolis, Modern Greek cuisine and signature cocktails. The inviting environment of the King George is manifested at every turn, especially in the outstanding and personalized service.

Your next stop may take you to Santorini. My favorite hotel collection there is Canaves Oia. Set in the village of Oia (pronounced EE-ah) on the rim of the Santorini caldera, the Canaves Oia Hotel will leave you exclaiming, “Ahhh!” Composed of renovated 17th-century houses carved into the cliff-side, this romantic retreat features 17 modern accommodations in the island’s iconic Cycladic architectural style. You’ll discover this is the perfect place to unwind and relax. Activities include taking in the spectacular view of the caldera from the pool, heading out during the day on a sightseeing tour, finding the ideal spot on one of the magnificent nearby beaches, and more. The unparalleled views of the caldera will make you never want to leave the sparkling infinity-edge pool. A refreshing beverage or cocktail from the pool bar completes the experience.

If you are looking for something a bit more off the beaten track, Crete is a great destination. Let loose at Abaton Island Resort & Spa. This destination is a labyrinth of gleaming white cubes located along Crete’s north coast just steps from gleaming beaches. The mod structures house 152 Zen-chic rooms, suites, and villas (many with private pools). Plus it has an Elemis spa along with five restaurants. Dining options include the island’s first Buddha-Bar Beach, which serves Asian fusion fare, DJ-spun music, and creative mixology all summer long. Parasol-covered sunbeds line 1,200 feet of shoreline, while the infinity-edge pool absolutely dazzles.

Cruises

If cruising is more your style, Greece is the perfect destination. There are so many island towns and historical sites to explore. On a cruise, you just have to unpack once as you explore your chosen itinerary. Pick from endless activities and shore excursions as you make your way through picturesque towns and villages. Marvel at the rocky coastlines and towering cliff-sides. Enjoy the magnificent sunrises as your day begins and sunsets as your day comes to a close.

One of my favorite cruise lines that sails this destination is Windstar. Any yacht lets you see the world. Windstar brings it close enough so you can fully live it. See, hear, smell, taste, and feel what it’s like to sail on a luxury yacht into a small port, explore a hidden beach, and altogether lose yourself in a strange and wondrous culture. These elegant, 148 to 342-guest yacht open up captivating new worlds and leave indelible, lifetime memories. This is 180 degrees from ordinary, where all your senses are indulged and your sense of wonder is awakened. This cruise line is perfect for an unforgettable honeymoon on the high seas as well. Exquisite sunsets, romantic breakfast in bed, a relaxing massage, all while sailing to some of the most romantic places in the world.

Tours

If ships are not your thing, try taking a tour to see more of the sights and culture of Greece. Day tours are perfect if you’ve picked out a hotel. There are many in the area that can guide you on an exclusive journey for the afternoon. If you can’t decide where to stay, take a multi-day tour and see more. If you have the time, some tours can last up to almost a month where you will fully immerse yourself into the Greek culture.

One tour that looks absolutely amazing is with a company called Intrepid. They have tours from 5-23 days depending on your travel style but I’m a ‘go big or go home’ kind of traveler. Dive into the magic of the Mediterranean on a 23-day Premium adventure through Turkey and Greece. Discover stunning islands and a sunken city, enjoy guided tours of Gallipoli, Troy, Ephesus, Antalya and more, and marvel at diverse landscapes, from the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia to the glittering Mediterranean Coast. Hop across to the storied city of Athens, explore the charming villages of Paros, uncover ancient riches in Naxos and soak up million-dollar views in Santorini. With knowledgeable local leaders and a group of like-minded travelers by your side, you’re never far away from an unforgettable moment.
